If you think that what’s going on in South America isn’t your problem just because you don’t live there, THINK AGAIN!
The Amazon rainforest is not supposed to burn at such an alarming rate. In fact, rainforests are forests characterized by high rainfall, with annual rainfall, in the case of tropical forest, between 250 and 450 centimetres.
Such a high density of rainfalls and humidity are natural protections from wildfires and usually, fires are due to the lack of rain. Occasionally, fires occur and they are due to lack of rain. However, ecologists didn’t observe any drop of rainfall recently as this year was quite humid and moist. (1) So how, on earth, fires in Amazonia have been increasing by 84% since the start of last year?
Bolsonario is the one to blame for such savage destruction!
The scientific community pretty much agrees that the recent guy who won the Brazilian election is the one to blame for such savage destruction. (2) During his career as a congressman and as a presidential candidate (1991–2019), Bolsonaro made statements in favour of prioritising the development of aggressive economic policies that were environmentally detrimental. Bolsonaro’s main argument for this bill is that environmental licenses should not act as a barrier against economic and infrastructure development. So, his policies are making easier for companies to get licences to destroy Amazonia on an account of lucrative goals.

Specifically, deforestation due to cattle farming is the major cause for the recent wildfires. A recent report “The Ultimate Mystery Meat” shows this connection and how meat production is responsible for the devastation of the Amazon rainforest. (3) How? Burger King sells sandwiches every day. The environmental impact of producing all this meat and selling it for a bunch of pennies is insane.
Cattle farming and soybean production are the main cause of deforastation!
Both the fast-food industry and other meat sellers, like supermarkets, get their raw materials from many questionable sources. Companies found in Burger King’s supply chain have been linked to the ongoing destruction of forests home for wildlife like sloths, jaguars, giant anteaters and other species. Additionally, soy is an important ingredient of the world’s meat. About 3/4 of the world’s soy goes to animal feed and more than 1 million square km of our planet are dedicated to growing soy. (3) In South America, soy and cattle interests have converted vast areas of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, Argentine, Bolivian and Paraguay from diverse native ecosystems into soy monocultures. From 2001-2010, an average of 4 million hectares of forests was destroyed each year, mostly for soy and cattle (3).
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SUPPORT AMAZONIA, THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE PLANET?
Sustainability and protection of the environment start with our choices, above all the folks you vote on election day! Sustainability means respecting people, their culture and traditions too. Bolsonaro has made loads of racists statements since he was appointed as president of Brazil. He compared indigenous people to animals in the zoo and committed to destroying Amazonia to deprive indigenous folks of any centimetre of this land. The guy is a nut and none with such core beliefs should be running a country and taking decisions which affect the entire planet not only Brazil.
Sustainability, protection of the environment and respect of people start with your choices!
My friend Niba, a PhD researcher in plant biology at Duke University, suggest:
- Protect the rainforest by donating money to the Rainforest Action Network, the Rainforest Trust, the Amazon Aid Foundation.
- Reduce your beef consumption, one of the primary drivers of Amazon deforestation. (America is the world’s leading consumer!) Rainforest beef is in fast-food burgers and processed beef, do your body and the forest a favour and cut it out of your diet. Alternatives to meat are available to purchase at Beyond Meat in North America or Quorn in Europe.
- Stay on this story, share posts, tag news agencies and influencers. Use your voice to make noise! Social pressure can drive changes and new legislation. Life goes beyond the 2 metre square of your backyard, INDIFFERENCE, SELFISHNESS AND IGNORANCE are as harmful as those who take these dreadful actions.
- STAY WOKE, THIS WON’T BE SOLVED OVERNIGHT! HUMANS ARE THE CAUSE AND WE NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!
Se pensate che quello che sta succedendo in Sud America non vi riguarda perchè non vivete lì, pensateci di nuovo!
La foresta Amazzonica non dovrebbe bruciare così facilmente poichè è una foresta pluviale, il che significa che è caratterizzata da vaste precipitazioni, intorno ai 250 e 450 centimetri cubi all’anno. Questa densità di precipitazioni e alta umidità rappresentano una protezione naturale contro gli incendi. Tipicamente, nei periodi di scarsa precipitazione, alcuni incendi si verificano, il che è totalmente normale. Tuttavia, scienziati che studiano la zona da anni, non hanno registrato nessun calo di precipitazione dall’inizio dell’anno. Quindi, le cause di questi incendi improvvisi e senza controllo, che sono aumentati dell’80% dall’inizio dell’anno 2018, si deve ricercare altrove.
La comunità scientifica è ormai d’accordo che c’è una sola persona responsabile di tutto questo ed è il presidente brazialiano Bolsonaro. Questo individuo non ha fatto altro che ignorare le politiche ambientali e dare prioritá agli interessi economici del Brasile. Infatti, tale individuo sostiene che le politiche ambientali non devono rappresentare una barriera allo sviluppo economico e la nascita di nuove infrastrutture. Per cui, da quando si è insediato presidente, ottenere una licenza per costruire e/o distruggere la foresta Amazzonica è diventato molto piú semplice.
In particolare, secondo un recente report “Il mistero della carne”, la deforastazione dovuta al pascolo di mucche è la causa principale dei recenti incendi. Burger King, per esempio, vende centinaia di burgers e panini ogni giorni a prezzi stracciati. Non solo i fast food, ma molti supermercati che vendono carne rossa ottengono le loro carni da dubbie fonti. Molte inchieste hanno messo in evidenza come i burger e le carni usate da Burger King sono correlate alla distruzione di foreste che sono dimora di ecosistemi ricchi di animali e specie in via di estinzione.
In più, i semi di soya sono la fonte di nutrimento principale delle mucche e altro bestiame e più di un milione quadrato della superficie globale è dedicato a questo tipo di agricoltura. In particolare, in Sud America, una vasta area di terreno, corrispondente a 4 milioni di ettari, della Foresta Amazzonica in Brazile, Uruguay, Bolivia e in Argentina è stata convertita in aree dedicate al pascolo e produzione di soya.
Uno sviluppo sostenibile volto al rispetto dell’ambiente e delle persone inizia con le nostre scelte e principalmente con le persone che si votano. Bolsenaro è responsabile della distruzione della foresta Amazzonica e, non solo, ha dichiarato guerra alle popolazione indigene della foresta che proteggono il suo ecosistema. Li ha paragonati ad animali nello zoo che bisogna sterminare poichè non degni di abitare nella foresta. Vi pare normale che questi personaggi debbano governare una nazione solo perchè nelle compagne elettorali promettono di abbassare le tasse e si proclamano paladini della religione cattolica?
Al di là del voto, altre azioni concrete che si possono adottare sono:
- Fare delle donazioni ad associazioni che proteggono l’ambiente e in particolare la foresta Amazzonica come il WWF.
- Ridurre drasticamente il consumo di carni rosse e soprattutto di quelle che provengino da dubbie fonti. Proteine e altri nutrienti si possono assimilare attraverso altre fonti, principalmente legumi.
- Informatevi, usate la vostra voce e i mezzi di comunicazione a scopo educativo. Indifferenza, ignoranza ed egoismo fanno tanto male tanto quelli che sono colpevoli di uccidere la foresta Amazzonica!
